Monotypic.

Related Species

Described as Hemiprocne fumigatus Streubel 1848; type locality Paraguay and Brazil (restricted to Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil by Zimmer 1945)

Cypseloides rothschildi (Rothschild's Swift) has been classified by some authors as a subspecies of fumigatus (e.g. Zimmer 1945), but most authors follow Rogers (1939) in recognizing fumigatus and rothschildi as separate species. Phylogenetic relationships within Cypseloides have not been resolved. Short (1975) considered fumigatus and rothschildi to form a superspecies, together with Cypseloides niger (Black Swift) and Cypseloides lemosi (White-chested Swift).

Fossil History

None reported.
