Yellow-tufted Woodpeckers are omnivores, primarily consuming fruits and insects (Johns 1991). Arthropods that are documented in the diet include ants, centipedes, and spiders (Schubart et al. 1965, Haverschmidt 1968). Thirty to fifty percent of foraging time is spent obtaining fruit (Pearson 1975, Robinson and Terborgh 1997), including native Schefflera morototoni (Purificação 2010), a Myrtaeceae (Schubart et al. 1965), cultivated oranges (Riker 1891), and nectar from Quararibea sp. (Robinson 1997).
