Forages in pairs. Often dives underwater to capture prey. Food shortages, as the larvae of anchovy (Engraulis mordax), may delay the breeding season.

Flight with fast wingbeats, emits a buzzing sound when flying. They are able to achieve flight without run over water.

Social and interspecific behavior

They arrive and leave of the nesting sites at night.
