Like other Elaenia, the White-crested Elaenia takes food with perch-gleans and hover-glearns.

Little known; presumably is monogamous, or at least socially monogamous.

Social and interspecific behavior

The White-crested Elaenia typically is solitary, but, at least when not breeding, may congregate with other frugivores at fruiting trees. Aggregations of up to 100 individuals have been reported during migration (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990). Sometimes associates with mixed-species flocks.
