Related Species

Described as Geotrygon albifacies Sclater 1858; type locality Jalapa, Vera Cruz, Mexico

Most species of Geotrygon, including albifacies, formerly were classified in the genus Oreopeleia (e.g. Ridgway 1916, Peters 1937, Hellmayr and Conover 1942).

Some authors (e.g. Hellmayr and Conover 1942) included albifacies and chiriquensis (Chiriqui Quail-Dove) as subspecies of Geotrygon linearis (Lined Quail-Dove) of the northern Andes. Sibley and Monroe (1990) included albifacies, chiriquensis, goldmani (Russet-crowned Quail-Dove) and linearis in a superspecies.

Geotrygon belongs to a clade with Zenaida and Leptoptila, although the relationships between these three genera are not well resolved (Shapiro et al. 2002, Pereira et al. 2007).
