Related Species

There are 10 species in the genus Lophornis, the males of six of which (including Tufted Coquette Lophornis ornatus) have a rufous crest; but relationships within Lophornis have not been determined.

Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data (from both nuclear and mitochondrial genes) indicates that there are nine clades of hummingbirds. Lophornis belongs to the Lophorini clade, within which Lophornis is sister to genus Discosura (thorntails) (McGuire et al. 2008).
