  • Order: Passeriformes

Geographic Variation

Grallaria chthonia, which is known from only a single location, is monotypic.

Related Species

Grallaria chthonia, based on plumage alone, appears most closely related to Grallaria guatimalensis (Scaled Antpitta) or Grallaria alleni (Moustached Antpitta). Hilty (2003) suggested that chthonia may be only a subspecies of guatimalensis, but Krabbe and Schulenberg (2003) considered chthonia "probably closely related to" alleni. Until further specimens have been collected, along with molecular and vocal evidence, its true affinities will remain uncertain. Regardless, chthonia clearly belongs to the subgenus Grallaria, which also includes G. varia (Variegated Antpitta), Grallaria gigantea (Giant Antpitta), Grallaria excelsa (Great Antpitta), Grallaria squamigera (Undulated Antpitta)Grallaria guatimalensis, Grallaria alleni, and Grallaria haplonota (Plain-backed Antpitta) (Lowery and O’Neill 1969).
