There is little information on the breeding biology of Southern Emerald-Toucanet, but presumably it is similar to that of Northern Emerald-Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus). The seasonality of breeding, primarily inferred from gonadal data from specimens, is January-September in Colombia and Venezuela; September-November in Ecuador; and May-September in Peru (Hilty and Brown 1986, Short and Horne 2001). As in other ramphastids, the nest is a cavity in a tree (Hilty and Brown 1986).
