Conservation Status

Globally it is considered a Near Threatened species. Although the population is considered large, it is thought to have undergone a moderately rapid decline owing to the impact of fisheries, the harvesting of its young and possibly climate change. In Mexico it is no under some protection category. Among the conservation measures proposed and implemented are: monitoring the colonies, removal of introduced predators, the study of the causes that lead to declining populations and, propose strategies to minimize these declines.
