Forages largely by shallow dives from surface or flight; attracted to chum, may follow fishing boats.

Flies swiftly, low over water, with several rapid flaps alternating with long, banking elides on straight, rigid, horizontal wings.

Social and interspecific behavior

Often found in loose flocks of a few to 50 or more individuals.
