Distribution in the Americas

Scaled Antpitta has a large geographic range. This species is found from southern Mexico south, almost continuously in montane areas, to central Bolivia.

Distribution outside the Americas

Confined to Central and South America.

Scaled Antpittas inhabit a fairly wide range of habitats, including humid evergreen forest, pine-oak and fir forest, and lowland rain forest. Regardless of habitat category, they are usually associated with natural and human-induced second growth and areas of dense, tangled vegetation.  Scaled Antpittas usually are most numerous at elevations from 500-2500 m, but occasionally occur as low as 200 and as high as 2800 m (Krabbe and Schulenberg 2003).
