Distribution in the Americas

It distributes from Mexico to Bolivia and northern Argentina. In Mexico it is found in southern Tamaulipas southward through the east, central and southern Mexico to Chiapas and Yucatan Peninsula.

It is a resident species, common to frequent. Its distributional range has been calculated in approximately 14,000,000 km2 and global population between 100,000 - 1,000.000 individuals.

It inhabits marshes, immature forests, and mangroves. It has been reported from sea level to 1400 m.
