Distribution in the Americas

Rufus Piha is resident from southern Mexico south to northern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. In most of Central America, it is restricted to the Atlantic slope, but in southern Costa Rica it is found on the Pacific slope, up to 1200 m (Skutch 1969, Stiles and Skutch 1989). Also occurs on the Pacific slope in Panama, in western Chiriquí province and in eastern Panama province and Darien (Wetmore 1972, Ridgely and Gwynne 1989).

Endemic to the Americas.


Rufous Piha occupies humid lowland evergreen forest, as well as with mature secondary forest (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989, Stiles and Skutch 1989). Also occasionally visits clearings with scattered trees (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
