The Puna Plover is distributed from central Peru south along the Andes into northern Chile and Argentina. The species is found between 2400 and 5000 meters in wetlands, freshwater lakes, and saltwater lakes. Adults are dull brown above and white below, with cinnamon coloration on the back of the head and crown. Puna Plovers have oddly squared heads with rather short, thick necks. While there are no subspecies described, this species has been considered conspecific with Two-banded Plover in the past.
