Diet and Foraging


Plain-capped Starthroat presumably is primarily nectarivorous. Flowering plants that this hummingbird is reported to visit include Agave macroacantha, Bromelia pinguinCombretum fructicosum, Erythrina chiapansa, E. goldman, E. lanata, E. pudica, E. tuxtlana, Genipa carutoHamelia versicolor, Ceiba aesculifolia, Ceiba, Bomacopsis, Tabebuia, Ipomoea quamoclit, Justicia mexicana, Ipomoea bracteata, Opuntia excelsa, Tillandsia paucifolia, and Nopalea karwinskiana, and occasionally Heliconia (Arizmendi and Ornelas 1990, Grij et al. 1990, Arizmendi et al. 1994, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Wolf 1970).

Plain-capped Starthroats also consume small insects (Dickey and van Rossem 1938, Remsen et al. 1986), as do most if not all species of hummingbirds.
