Distinguishing Characteristics

48 cm. 700 g. Large, bulky. Bill pinkish with dark tip. Upperparts dark gray-brown, may show slightly contrasting M pattern. Sides of head dusky, throat white. Underparts white, with dark wing-margins and variable dusky mottling on feathers that cover the wings and flanks. Undertail dark. Legs pinkish. Males and females are similar.

Similar Species

Light morph Puffinus pacificus has longer tail, a clear scaled on back, legs and bill darker, and different flight.
