Related Species

The Olrog’s Gull has been considered as a subspecies of the Belcher’s Gull (Larus belcheri) of Pacific coasts of South America (Olrog 1958). However, later studies showed that Olrog’s and Belcher’s gulls differ in size, proportions, adult and juvenile plumages, eye-ring color (Devillers 1977, Olrog 1967), and parental behavior (Devillers 1977). Genetic distances have confirmed the two are separate species (Pons et al. 2005).
