Geographic Variation

Three recognized subspecies (Zimmer and Isler 2003):

P. m. saturatus (E. Honduras, south to Costa Rica, extreme western Panama)

P. m. mcleannani (C and eastern Panama and NW Colombia)

P. m. pacificus (extreme SW Colombia and NW Ecuador)

Related Species

Though in a monotypic genus, Ocellated Antbird shares a clade with most of the other obligate ant-following antbirds (Pithys, Willisornis, Phlegopsis, Gymnopithys, Ghegmatorhina) (Moyle 2009). Ocellated is most closely related to Pithys, but all these antbirds share obligate ant-following as an ancestral trait (Moyle 2009, Brumfield 2007).
