Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Development

Chicks vocalize throughout most of their development (Gallardo et al., unpublished data). In the last month before fledging, chicks begin to chirp at a higher pitch, similar to adults (Gallardo et al., unpublished data).

Vocal Array

Chicks chirp . Adults make a variety of calls , as well as a series of wheezes, purrs, and chatters (2).

Geographic Variation

Information is needed.

Phenology

In Arica, birds call from before egg-laying (April-May) until eggs hatch (August-September) (Gallardo et al., unpublished data). Calls are more intense at the beginning of that period (Gallardo et al., unpublished data)

Daily Pattern of Vocalizing

Markham's Storm-Petrel only calls during the night. In Arica, it calls more often in the first two hours after sunset (Pinto et al., unpublished data).

Places of Vocalizing

Birds vocalize as they enter breeding colonies (e.g., in Caleta Vitor; Gallardo et al., unpublished data), while in flight at colonies (26), and from within nesting burrows.

Sex Differences

Information is needed.

Social Context and Presumed Functions of Vocalizations

Presumably, vocalizations are used for marking territories.

Nonvocal Sounds

None known.
