Demography and Populations

Measures of Breeding Activity

Age at First Breeding

Little information is available, but a bird of two years was recorded returning to the breeding colonies (Peredo et al. unpublished data).

Intervals Between Breeding

Little information is available, but at least some birds can breed yearly.

Clutch Size and Number of Clutches per Season

One egg per nest and one clutch per season.

Annual and Lifetime Reproductive Success

In 2021-2023, 70.78% of eggs at Pampa Chuño, Chile, survived to fledging; 65.22% survived in Pampa Chaca, Chile; and 70.23% survived in Pampa Camarones, Chile (Gallardo et al., unpublished data). In Peru, hatching success was 43.4-54.8%, and fledging success was 52.9-63.2% (26).

Number of Broods Normally Reared per Season

One.

Proportion of Total Females that Rear ≥ One Brood to Nest-Leaving

Information is needed.

Life Span and Survivorship

No information available.

Disease and Body Parasites

Body Parasites

The generalist stick-tight flea Hectopsylla psittaci was described for this species from the Arica colony (41). Philoceanus amadoni has been described for birds grounding in Lima (42), which was also recorded in Chile (R. Palma, personal communication). In the nest, up to 60% of the younger nestlings can have ectoparasites, while the number increases to 100% in older fledglings (26).

Causes of Mortality

Known causes of direct mortality are light pollution (23, 43), collision with powerlines (Gutiérrez et al. unpublished data), and natural predation (see also Behavior: Predation).

Population Spatial Metrics

Colonies can span between 33–6,100 hectares, with average densities that vary between 0.5–248.15 pairs/hectare (23, 32).

Population Status

Numbers

The first population size estimates are based on at-sea counts. In the austral spring, the population was estimated to be 700,000–1,000,000 individuals, and in austral autumn, the population was estimated to be 1,000,000–1,600,000 (35).

Estimates at colonies are much smaller, with approximately 150,000 mature individuals, comprising 58,000 breeding pairs (55,300 in Chile and 2,700 in Paracas; 23, 26, 32). Information is needed regarding colonies in southern Peru, which could increase these numbers.

Trends

Population trends are unknown, and could be studied using autonomous recorders.
