Distribution in the Americas

Talamanca Hummingbird occurs in montane areas of Costa Rica and western Panama. In Costa Rica, it is found in the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera de Talamanca (Stiles and Skutch 1989); in Panama it occurs only in western Chiriquí, on the Volcán Barú massif (Wetmore 1968, Ridgely and Gwynne 1989).

In Costa Rica, Talamanca Hummingbird occurs from 2000 m up to treeline, but is most common above 2500 m; it also occurs "sporadically" to as low as 1850 m, which perhaps represents seasonal movements (Stiles and Skutch 1989). The elevational range in Panama is 1600-2400 m (Wetmore 1968).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Talamanca Hummingbird occurs in montane oak forests, but is especially common "at edges and breaks in [the] canopy or in adjacent second growth" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
