Conservation Status

BirdLife International (2014) evaluates the IUCN Red List conservation status of Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture as of Least Concern. This species may serve as an indicator species whose presence reflects the overall fitness of tropical wetland ecosystems.

Effects of human activity on populations

Factors resulting in the decline of wetland areas can have a negative effect on the population and distribution of Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture. Such factors not only include draining of wetland areas for agriculture and development but climate change that alters rainfall patterns. On the other hand this species may benefit from deforestation (Schulenberg et al. 2010, Global Raptor Information Network 2014).
