Priorities for Future Research

Lovely Cotinga is widely distributed, but in much of its range it is uncommon, it is quiet, and it occupies the canopy of tall forest; consequently very little is known about its natural history. Perhaps the most important research priority is to better understand the extent to which this species is nomadic or migratory, as our understanding of its population size, geographic range, and potential responses to ongoing deforestation are dependent upon better knowledge of when or where Lovely Cotinga occurs. The diet of the cotinga is very poorly known, and only two nests have been reported. There also is no knowledge of demographic factors such as age at first breeding, life span and survivorship, dispersal, or population regulation.
