Priorities for Future Research

Lesser Violetear is a common and widespread species, yet there are large knowledge gaps on much of its life history. Furthermore, most of what is known about this species is based on the northernmost population, in Costa Rica; very little is reported about its biology in South America. Future research is needed in the area of population demography, such as age at first breeding, life span, survivorship, dispersal, and population regulation. Much also remains to be discovered about individual and geographic variation in song, and about song learning in Lesser Violetear.
