TYPE LOCALITY:
Koepcke collection 1699 a.u. on loan in AMNH, female adult, 3 Aug. I960, Peru, Dep. Ancash, Quebrada Yanganuco, near Yungai, Cordillera Bianca, in Polylepis wood, 4000 m, grey morph, wing about l80 mm, collected by Maria Koepcke. Distribution an habitat. Peruvian and Bolivian Andes between 1500-4500 m (5OOO-I5OOO ft), in Bolivia eventually lower; subtropical and lower temperate dry woodland and cloud forest, up to the tree limit.

Breeding
Introduction
There is very little information on the breeding biology of Koepcke's Screech-Owl. At least in south central Peru, breeding occurs in February-March, the local wet season (Fjeldså et al. 2012). Presumably this species typically nests in cavities in trees. The only reported nest, however, was in a cavity 3 m above the ground in a 4 m tall roadcut (Fjeldså et al. 2012). The opening of the hole was oval shaped, ca 30 cm high and 70 cm wide, and 1 m deep, tapering to a chamber that was ca 20 cm high and 40 cm wide (Fjeldså et al. 2012). The nest contained one adult and two downy nestlings (Fjeldså et al. 2012).
