Distribution in the Americas

It breeds on Alejandro Selkirk Island in the Juan Fernández Islands, Chile. It is a trans-equatorial migrant, dispersing over the tropical and subtropical waters of the east Pacific, north to Hawaii, USA, and is regularly seen off west Mexico, with vagrants recorded in New Zealand.

In the nesting sites is considered a fairly common although it is thought that the population could decline in coming years. It is considered a frequent to common visitor to waters around Clipperton, uncommon to frequent on northern Colima and vicinity of Islas Revillagigedo (between May and August).
