Sounds and Vocal Behavior

The most common vocalization produced by both sexes in Hoffmann's Woodpecker is a churrr call.

For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio

Hoffmann'a Woodpecker also produces an excited call that Stiles and Skutch (1989) describe as "a querulous, grating, woick-a woick-a woick-a ... or wicka wicka wicka".

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Hoffmann's Woodpecker can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.

Nonvocal Sounds

Hoffmann's Woodpecker drums on trees, primarily on dead branches or trunks, although it sometimes also drums on metallic structures (personal observations).
