Distribution in the Americas

Hoffmann’s Woodpecker is resident from the southwestern Honduras (Choluteca department) through the Pacific slope of Nicaragua to the central Pacific region of Costa Rica (Jaco and Parrita, Puntarenas province) and Central and Turrialba Valleys (Monroe 1968, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Martínez-Sánchez and Will 2010). In Honduras occurs from sea level to 200 m (Monroe 1968), in Nicaragua occurs from sea level to 800 m (Martínez-Sánchez 2007), and in Costa Rica occurs from sea level close to 2150 m (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Garrigues and Dean 2007).

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Hoffmann's Woodpecker occupies dry and deciduous forest, shade coffee plantations, and open areas with isolated trees such as urban parks and house gardens (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Winkler and Christie 2002, Sandoval and Barrantes 2006).

Historical changes

This species actually occurs in Caribbean lowland rain forest of Costa Rica (Sandoval and Vargas 2007).
