Hoffmann's Woodpecker Melanerpes hoffmannii

  • Order: Piciformes
  • Family: Picidae
  • Monotypic
  • Authors: Luis Sandoval

Conservation Status

Hoffmann’s Woodpecker is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, due to its large geographic range and an apparently stable population trend (BirdLife International 2013).

Effects of human activity on populations

Hoffmann’s Woodpecker has increased its distribution in tecent years due in part to deforestation following growing human colonization of the lowland rain forest (Sandoval and Vargas 2007), especially in areas that maintain some isolated trees, such as urban parks, coffee plantations, house gardens (Sandoval and Barrantes 2006). Elimination of dead trees, however, negatively affects the population of this species, by limit the nesting substrates. No other human threats to Hoffmann's Woodpecker are known.
