Related Species

Formerly placed in the Genus Leucopternis, the species was considered a race of the White Hawk (Leucopternis albicolli) to which is closely related (Bierregard 1994; Lerner et al. 2008; Raposo do Amaral et al. 2009). Recent genetic studies based on nuclear and mithochondrial DNA within the buteonine hawks separated the Leucopternis species into five species: Buteogallus, Leucopternis, Morphnarchus, Cryptoleucopterix and Pseudastur, with the Gray-backed Hawk belonging to this last genera (Lerner and Mindell 2005; Lerner et al. 2008; Raposo do Amaral et al. 2009, South American Clasification Comittee 2016).
