Diet

Primarily nectarivorus. Sources of nectar include herbs such as Salvia, Lobelia and Cirsium, shrubs such as Centropogon, Cephalelis, Besleria, Cuphaea, Fuchsia, and Stachytapheta, epiphytes such as Columnea, Psittacanthus and other bromeliads, and trees such as Inga, Clusia and Erythrina (Wagner 1945, Colwell et al. 1974, Stiles 1999). Like other hummingbirds, also consumes small insects (Remsen et al. 1986, Stiles 1999).
