Green Hermit Phaethornis guy

  • Order: Caprimulgiformes
  • Family: Trochilidae
  • Polytypic: 4 subspecies
  • Authors: Alice McBride

Geographic Variation

Four subspecies are recognized.

coruscus: Distributed from Costa Rica to northwest Colombia (Hinkelmann and Schuchmann 1997). The plumage is more glittering in both sexes than in nominate guy. Compared to guy, the body coloration is more blue and less green (Snow 1977). Bill is of intermediate length, similar to nominate guy (Zimmer 1950).

guy: Distributed in northeast Venezuela, and Trinidad (Hinkelmann and Schuchmann 1997). Bill is of intermediate length, similar to coruscus (Zimmer 1950).

emiliae: Distributed on slopes in northern and central Colombia – specifically in the Cauca and Magdalena valleys, and the Santa Marta massif (Hinkelmann and Schuchmann 1997). Bill is longer than in the other three subspecies (Zimmer 1950).

apicalis: Distributed along the eastern Andes from northern Colombia to southeast Peru (Hinkelmann and Schuchmann 1997). This subspecies may be distinguished from emiliae by a shorter bill (Zimmer 1950).

Related Species

Phaethornis guy belongs to the subfamily Phaethornithinae, within the family Trochilidae. Other genera in Phaethornithinae are Eutoxeres, Ramphodon, Glaucis, Threnetes, and Anopetia (Hinkelmann and Schuchmann 1997, McGuire et al. 2007, McGuire et al. 2008).

Phylogenetic analyis of DNA sequence data, from both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, indicates that the sister species to Phaethornis guy is Phaethornis yaruqui (White-whiskered Hermit) (McGuire et al. 2007, 2008).
