The IUCN Red List conservation status of Great Black Hawk is assessed as Least Concern, with a stable population trend (Birdlife International 2016).

Effects of human activity on populations

Although deforestation is ongoing in many parts of the range, Great Black Hawk is somewhat tolerant of habitat modification (Johns 1991, Jullien and Thiollay 1996, Thiollay 1997, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001); no threats to this species are identified by Great Black Hawk (BirdLife International 2016).
