The two subspecies of Patagona gigas are the only taxa in this genus. The genus Patagona has no close relatives, and stands on it's own as a distant sister taxon to a clade containing the Emeralds (tribe: Trochilinae), the Bees (tribe: Mellisuginae), and the Mountain-Gems (tribe: Lampornithinae) (McGuire et al. 2007). A separate tribe name, Patagoninae, has been proposed for this unique hummingbird lineage (McGuire et al. 2009).
