Two subspecies currently recognized (Dickinson and Christidis 2014). Tangara schrankii anchicayae Lehmann 1957, accepted by Storer (1970), is a junior synonym of Blue-whiskered Tanager Tangara johannae (Haffer 1975).

Occurs in southeastern Venezuela (extreme eastern Amazonas and Bolívar).
Subspecies venezuelana is very similar to nominate schrankii, but in the male "the yellow rump patch is prominent, of a less pure yellow and with a greenish tint" (Phelps and Phelps 1957).
schrankii, described as Tangara schrankii Spix 1825; type locality not specified, restricted to Tabatinga, Brazil (Hellmayr 1936: 93).
Occurs throughout the range of the species, other than southeastern Venezuela.
