Diet and Foraging

The Flame-crested Tanager forages up in the canopy. The diet probably is mostly terrestrial invertebrates, but it also consumes fruits and seeds (Haverschmidt 1968).  May descend lower when foraging for fruit, berries, and seeds (Restall et al. 2007). In Brazil, considered to be primarily insectivorous (Sick 1985). Stomach contents include vegetable matter (fruit, berries, and seeds) and animal matter (insects, including Orthoptera: Locustidae (Haverschmidt 1968, Isler and Isler 1999).
