The Fernandina's Flicker is probably the largest living woodpecker found today in Cuba. The whole body is evenly bright yellowish brown barred with dark brown or black. Head in both sexes is cinnamon barred dark brown except in the auricular area; males present a black malar area, it resembles a mustache, which is absent on females. Both sexes have a black stripe crown. White rump with a few thin bars.
