Priorities for Future Research

The Arizona population (subspecies canescens) is by far the best studied and is the source of much of our current understanding of Elegant Trogons. Other subspecies are much less known; it will be important to confirm to extent to which the biology of canescens in Arizona, at the very margin of the distribution of the species, is representative of other populations.

The migratory, molting, and direct life history traits (fecundity, mortality, longevity, etc) are poorly known for any subspecies and should be a priority of future study.  Nonbreeding (winter) distribution is also essentially unknown for the migratory populations of canescens.
