Adult male Elegant Trogon at nest. (C) Nathan Williams 2009.Breeding occurs May-July (Grant 1966). Nests are usually adopted woodpecker holes or cavities of Megascops owls (Taylor 1994, Edwards and Martin 1955) typically 3-7.6 off the ground (Martin et al 1954, Taylor 1979-1983) and often in oak, pine or sycamore trees. The female typically lays 2-4 unmarked, dull-white, round, nearly oval eggs (Taylor 1979-1983, Short 1974, Bent 1940). Parents work cooperatively to feed young.
