Introduction

Elegant Crested-Tinamou is a charismatic terrestrial bird of western Argentina and windswept Patagonia. It can be found in flocks of 5-10 birds that scurry through low steppe vegetation, and often is detected by its downslurred, whistled calls. The species, known as the martineta in Argentina, is comprised of a number of weakly differentiated subspecies. Though quite common in parts of southern Argentina, Elegant Crested-Tinamou is only poorly known from Chile.
