Distribution in the Americas

Resident in the Andes from northwestern Venezuela south, on the Pacific slope, to northwestern Peru, and, on the eastern slope, to Bolivia. Distribution in Peru of Colaptes rivolii. Solid circles: specimen records; open circles; sight records; dotted line: 1000 m contour (Schulenberg et al. 2006)

The elevational range in Colombia primarily is 1800-3500 m, but locally it occurs down to 700 m on the Pacific slope in Cauca (Hilty and Brown 1986). In Ecaudor it occurs primarily at 2000-3300 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001), and in Peru the elevational range is 1900-3500 m, although locally it occurs as low as 1500 m (Schulenberg et al. 2007).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.


Occurs in humid montane forests, at forest edge, and at the edge of paramo.
