Introduction

The Chilean Mockingbird is a large, brown mockingbird that is nearly endemic to central Chile, with just a minor population in Neuquén, Argentina. The species shows dark streaking on buffy flanks, a long dark tail with white edges and corners, and an obvious white supercilium. In Chile, this mockingbird is common in the central valley and lowlands from the Atacama desert to the edges of the temperate rainforest in the south. It is one of the few species that was benefited by the deforestation in this area. It is often found perched on fences, utility poles, or running on the ground. The loud, jumbled song usually lacks mimicry, with the musical phrases repeated two or three times each.
