Buff-collared Nightjar has a broad distribution, and although the population, although not quantified, is believed to be in decline, the IUCN Red List status of Buff-collared Nightjar is Least Concern (BirdLife International 2013). In Mexico it is not considered to be a threatened species.

The population of Buff-collared Nightjar is believed to be in decline due to ongoing habitat desctruction (BirdLife International 2013).
