Distribution in the Americas

A "Trans-Andean" species, the Blue Cotinga has been recorded from its Western-most point in the Canal Zone of Eastern Panama. Mainly found in Northwest South America in the extreme west of Venezuela, and in northern and western Colombia including north-central and northwestern portions of the Rio Magdalena Valley. The southernmost reaches of the range lie in extreme northwestern Ecuador from Esmeraldas to San Miguel de los Bancos.

Distribution outside the Americas

Unknown outside of the Americas.

The Blue Cotinga is best known to inhabit the canopy of humid lowland forests and secondary woodlands. Primarily found from 0-300m and up to 1,000m in portions of the Andes. Recorded at up to 1,400m in Colombia. Lowland forest and scrub habitat seem to be most preferred. (Del Hoyo, 2004; Kirwan 2012; De Shauensee 1964).
