Breeding

The crest, the ornamentation on head and the contrasting pattern of the face and chest are important for reproductive displays.

It nests between April and August. Builds its nest in cavities covered with grass on the ground. Eggs pale buff to white, sometimes with dark spots, measured on average 30.5 x 22.7 mm.
