Breeding adult

Stock, short-legged shorebird with a stout, slightly upturned bill. Breeding birds are blackish overall with a white spot behind the bill.

Nonbreeding

Stocky shorebird of rocky coastlines. Nonbreeding birds are brownish black with a white belly.
