Two subspecies recognized:
zeledoni, described as Pittasoma michleri zeledoni Ridgway; 1884 type locality Río Sucío, Cosa Rica
Occurs in Costa Rica and in western Panama (Bocas del Toro), although specimens from Panama are somewhat intermediate towards michleri (Wetmore 1972).
Darker, more rufous on upperparts; sides of the head black, with only the auriculars brown.
michleri, described as Pittasoma Michleri Cassin 1860; type locality Río Truando, Colombia
Occurs in Panama (except extreme west) and extreme northwestern Colombia.
