Distinguishing Characteristics

23 cm. 460 - 510 mm wingspan. 55 g. Eyes brown. Bill black. Large size. Plumage brownish black overall, with a paler bar across upperwings. Tail deeply forked. Legs black and very long. Males and females are similar.

Similar Species

Least Storm-Petrel (Oceanodroma microsoma) is smaller; rounded or wedge-shaped tail. Ashy Storm-Petrel (Oceanodroma homochroa) is smaller, in flight gives faster beats with the wings. Other storm-petrels have white rump.
