Demography and Populations

Population size estimated to be approximately 5000 individuals (though Simons et al. 2006 suggested 5000-19000 was conceivable, such high numbers appear highly unlikely).  Little information on demography, and information gathering may be confounded by variation (Howell and Patteson 2008).  Mating season apparently begins after September, with eggs probably laid during January, and young birds hatched by March (Simons et al. 2006, from Murphy 1936).
