Sounds and Vocal Behavior

There is little available information on vocalizations of Beautiful Hummingbird. The calls of this species are described as "high, twittering chips, much like [those of] Lucifer Hummingbird [Calothorax lucifer]" (Howell and Webb 1995).

During the flight display (see Sexual Behavior) the male Beautiful Hummingbird utters "a very high, thin to slightly squeaky t-swiik t-swiik ..., or w-siiu w-siiu ...", which is repeated up to four times (Howell and Webb 1995).

There are few available audio recordings of vocalizations of Beautiful Hummingbird; additional examples can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.
